This site has an interesting spotlight effect on the main items. Anyone know what technique this is and how is done in flash???

On the home page?
Looks like just twp different images to me (one light & one with the highlight) and just swap em on rollover/rollout. And a listener to see if an image has been rolled over to dim the background.
