anybody have an estimate as to the amout of revenue that would come from a site with only a 1000 hits a month?

it's based on clicks more than visits to your site.

and generally with 1k in uniques a month you'd probably get 10-50 bucks. more towards the low end I'm sure. all depends on the site, but yeah, they CPM absolutely blows. Not worth sucking up the aesthetics for that kind of $.

unless these ads are focused on what his users will be looking for (i.e. useful to them) they will only serve to detract from either the content or the experience. Also with click thru rates in the low single digits the extra revenue will be not worth the effort.

We get a few million page views a month and still think Google ads would be marginal... but it depends on the subject of the site, and what keywords you would be restricting the ads to... They can be made relevant and blended into the site design... The main thing to consider is the time taken to set all that up, and the time for ongoing tweaking, vs the revenue... hardly worth it?
