Had a handyman come by today to re-secure the doors he pried open. But in the end it's kinda pointless, you know? He said "If someone really wants to get inside your house they'll break a window"... I was like "yeah, I guess so" when I realized he had a point. Even if the alarm is on, you get your shit violated. And if it's a quick grab and go like it was yesterday it really doesn't matter. At this point I'm worried about this dude coming back for shit like my computer now that he's seen what's in the house. The alarm will be on this time, but that's not going to prevent damage by any means. My biggest concern is for my family, and if he shows up while they're here and I'm not.

On an even shittier note, an ADT salesman left a flier at my door today. Either he's in on it or he scanned the local police website for the incident. Either way, he's a piece of shit salesman trying to prey on people already fucked off by this whole thing. fuck him too.

It’s really pretty easy to jump to all sorts of conclusions when your nerves are still so raw – some of them might be spot-on – some not so much. In my experience, all you can do is probably a bit more than you did before and be vigilant. Just don’t do something like buy a gun or something – that stuff just ends up going bad. If it comes down to it, in a hand-to-hand situation (God forbid) all you can do is unleash mad skillz from your action-movie-going experience.

Not to make light of it, but you will feel better sooner rather than later.

    • yeah, you're right Mr100... but I do have some actual skills that I'd love to unleash on a ass-hat like this dude.Point5

    Point5,

My apartment was broken into a few years ago while I was out of town. I got a 2:00 a.m. phone call from my roommate who had just gotten home from work. Some stuff was scattered about, and they took all of our DVD's (I had 65 stolen) a watch from both bedrooms, some loose money, and that was about it.

I had and have my suspicions that it was a girl we knew, but I didn't want to press it (long story).

But I did have renters insurance and got a decent amount of money back. I was really nervous in the days after the break in. I had all kinds of music recording gear, two computers, a guitar, and other stuff in my room. Made me think they'd come back. They even opened a case I have a really nice condenser mic in, and the case is pretty solid, looks like it could hold a pistol. They probably had no idea what it actually was, but it looked expensive.

They came in through a window in the back that was open - stupid us. Just glad I had the renters insurance.

"If someone really wants to get inside your house they'll break a window"

Yeah thats why you get your windows laminated with a film. The film does a few things. It stops the window from being smashed in as quickly (takes like 5 minutes of brutal punishment to smash the window in and its pretty noisey) and also insulates the glass so that less heat and noise can pass through the glass. You get a safer, quieter and better insulated house. I went for a 3m ultra 600 at my place.

Only thing to be aware of is if there is a fire these things are a absolute bitch to knock out, throwing a chair through the window wont come close to doing it. You need to have other exits or know where the keys to your window locks are at all times.

Just an idea... bit expensive if your are a renter though. Whole house was around $1900 installed.

one problem doh. the safer your house is to break into, the harder it will be for ex. firefighters to get into it. incase of a fire. which is a race gains time. also breaking a window makes a lot of noise....I am sure your neighbor would had call the cops then.

No matter what you do someone can get in. My room mate in my last apartment locked himself out at 2 in the morning and I was out of state. We lived on the second floor of our building and using his crazy acrobatic military training he managed to climb up the side of the brick building and get the window at the top of the stairs open.

He did all of this pretty noisily and no one said boo.

Make sure your alarm is as loud as shit. People tend to ignore those things unless they piss them off enough to get fumed and decide to say something. I heard this car alarm that was pure gold. Instead of running through the sound effects or honking the horn it was a woman's voice shouting "HELP HELP, HE'S TOUCHING ME!!!" That got everyone's attention. I wonder if you could get that for your house...

I have this for my security system

When the building I live in was robbed, mine was one of the two units that didn't have anything taken - didn't even bust my door open like the other units.
    Dogs are awesome.

But, I feel for what you have to deal with.

One afternoon we came back from our board room to catch a guy in the middle of robbing our office. He was under one of the desks trying to disconnect a laptop.

i have heard stories about robbers coming back to re-rob a couple months later after the victims have replaced everything...

who knows. just stay home, dont shave and think everyone is guilty.

    • Buy a shotgun and leave the receipt where someone will see it.ornj
    • Actually maybe you shouldn't do that or you might come home to find the guy holding it.ornj

damn. i really hate thieves. sorry to hear your house got broken into greg. and you're totally right... most petty thieves will come back a few months later after they saw what you're house has that they can steal. those motion cameras are a f*ckin brilliant idea. ADT... f those guys. Nothing more than ambulance chasers. Keep yo chin up. Talk to you soon big guy.

I was robbed while I was home once, shitty feeling. At least it was minimal, and items can be replaced. Luckily no one was home.
