You guys missed the point. There is a line between appropriation and out and out THEFT!!!!! Not to mention, here's a rich white guy in a position of power exploiting native and minority cultures for a huge profit. AND at the same time, he sits on his pedestal at preaches to the masses about the horrors of capitalism, war, etc.
And yes, this pisses me off. It should to anyone with a cursory knowledge of political art and the struggle of its artists.
I thought designers would get this. Maybe even give a shit. Guess I was wrong. You just go ahead with all the other idiots who idolize this fool. As long as i doesn't affect you. right? .

I'm not totally sure where I stand on it. His artwork doesn't appeal to me personally, so I guess I don't have strong feelings about it one way or another. A lot of the music I listen to samples or appropriates other artist so I guess I can see it as a valid form of art in that sense. On the other hand, I agree it is kind of lame that he apparently does so little of the actual creation himself, esp when I think a lot of people look at his work and think that it is mostly his. So, hard to say, I don't think he deserves the status he was gotten in the design and art world but you could probably say that about half the people out there:)

Mark Vallen is simply trying to jumpstart his go-nowhere career by bashing someone who actually HAS one. It's a time-honored tradition among the second-rate and failing. The fact that he passed out literature-- including HIS OWN ART-- amongst those standing in line at Fairey's show ought to tell you he's simply an opportunist out to raise his own profile. If he were truly interested in constructive dialogue he would have picked up the phone and made the local call to Fairey to ask him about it. Then, if he wasn't satisfied with the answers-- or at least wanted to include them-- he could have offered up the other side of the coin. Instead, he posted a shrill call of "Look at Me!" in hopes of selling a few more canvases of his Jr. High caliber artwork. Pretty sad, really.

Even though I'm not particularly a fan of his, I see nothing wrong with what he does. Its like the beastie boys sampling music they didn't have permission to back in the day.
For me, using any existing elements IN an original piece is fine as long as you modify it, or create something new with it.
If you're not trying to take credit for someone elses work, who cares.

I had never seen this particular article before, somewhat interesting. Although, everyone knows he steals *cough* "appropriates" his work. I don't particularly know or care where I stand on this in a matter of opinion. If anything it explains why he hasn't come up with anything NEW. I mean, at least Banksy has been testing the new frontier with his animal/zoo works and using of technology. Fairey is old balls news, besides art went fag a long time ago. Everything is collaged and copied, everyone is doing it. It's not the new crack.
