yes yes, it's been discussed before somewhere i'm sure BUT, what is a reasonable price to charge for fine tuning a logo from a small-midsize jpg? the client already has the logo but wants to do some slight updates to it and i would have to generate a vector version for it also. The client is independently running his own company, so nothing major or corporate, but is known within his field. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

That's, essentially, just an artworking charge, then? That's the sort of job I'd have no problem just charging an hourly rate for, with an agreed 'x hours' minimum. I guess that, for me, would be around £30p/h? ($60 p/h) - at, perhaps, 3 hours work? I guess it depends on what you mean by 'slight updates'.
Also, just in case you haven't seen it (I'm sure you have)..

I always resort to the AIGA's contract guidelines. They really talk about great ways to set price standards and rights etc. I don't know too much on the rights when you fine tune a logo, but they have a lot of great answers..

all great responses, thanks guys. I guess the hourly rate is a good starting point, but i would need to figure out one based on this type of job... as radar said, it could take 30 min or 6 hours! i still don't know what exactly is required as the client might decide that he wants an overall re-vamp of the logo instead of minor changes...

I have had success in these regards.
I have a document/ bill that states the work up front.
I do not undersell myself. if the job is 6 hours, and you have issues and it takes 18 hours... you really hurt yourself.
Find out what is fair for you to do the job, it's that simple. When you hand over the document that states exactly what you want to do, the client will tell you if thats what they want or not, if it isn't what they want, work to getting to understand exactly what they want. And re-write the bill. =)
