these things are getting out of hand

Agreed. Some tech people were talking about this the other day in a podcast. Many of these Web2.0 sites only catch on for a while and then disappear. I guess Facebook has been around for a while and is only getting stronger, but I still don't think it's worth that high of an amount.

Read the article, the value is the personal info that site has been able to collect on it's 49 million users which is growing by 250k new users per day.

Politicians are using it now to get votes and find out more information about the people themselves.

You'd be surprised at how many people have politicians as friends, especially in Ottawa. For example, I know at least 10 different people who wanted to be friends with Stephane Dion. And one or two who never got a reply, lol.

do you guys all realize the amount of data tracking occurring on facebook? daily the database is compared to news feeds to build a profile of users, the information is controlled by trending companies and compiled with other private data from several other facets of your life and personal business.
facebook has a very good idea of who you are, where you shop, the type of people you are likely to be friends with, and how much you spend on entertainment and the basics of life just to name a few.
facebook is the pure evil of data engineering and profiling. it is all of this back end data analysis, tracking, and comparison that gives it it's exorbitant value, not the ad space.

Well said Justin, I think the average person doesn't quite get that.
I also laugh at people who think their profile and info on Facebook is not tracked and is somehow kept "private".
M$ or a number of other companies would pay out the ass for mg33's Dickbook if got a serious amount of users.

my humorously ironic facebook page will throw a wrench in their systems!

We had that exact discussion in my Internet class at school. Most of the people in my class knew what was going on, but lots of people don't care. They go on Facebook all the time. I see students using that site on their laptops during class when they should be taking notes or at least listening to what the prof is talking about.
