Solar powering something in an apartment might be impractical. If you're a plumber and have access to good sunlight, you could hook up a solar water heater that preheats your water before it sits in your hot water heater. Relatively easy compared to setting up solar panels, which aren't really cost effective for the scale you're thinking.
Additionally, there's a lot more you can do besides thinking solar power. Recycling is a big one (lots of energy is used in making most of the products consumers dump in landfills -- by reusing, you're saving energy).
Public transportation is another option (or cycling to work).
Another great option is just consume less.

Time a go i´ve been researching about, for installing solar pannels at the garden, a new cheap cost technology (using less silicon on pannels) made in Ger, calcullating how many m² of pannel for house consume i need, etc.
Finally when i saw the sun hours at the year we´re getting here and the pannels eating my little grass...
Decided to install low consum lamps at home.
Solar powering is little developed even.
