Speaking from a musical perspective what I loved about Zep was that they're songs were very composed but there was plenty of improvisational room in them..they walked that fine line between playing a composition and then taking somewhere different without losing sight of the original song. That and how Jimmy Page's solos are integral parts of the song. I mean you couldn't play a different solo and have the same song - yet Pagey mixed it up nightly. Amazing. Whereas the Who never really improvised much and the Stones were all about "Let's hit some chords and see what comes out, I'm sure we'll stumble on our song somewhere in the mess..."
That tension between composition/improvisation is hardly ever reached by bands - especially these days...

there is a led zep cover band here in asheville named "custard pie." the lead singer is female which actually makes a lot of sense, with lots of robert plant's notes being quite high pitched. and if you're going to watch a led zep cover band you might as well have a good looking lady up there on the stage. my wife and i are friends with the singer and her husband. here be a clip:

i am actually surprised that Chuck D places the Beetles above LZ. always wondered why he did that....

Zep had better musicians, but that's it. album for album, there's no comparison.

I know it's unfair and it's just my experience and age, but when I was a small child - 4, 5, 6 years old it was the early 70s and my mom would play beatles records all the time, so for me the Beatles is like children's music - reflects both the time of my life and the simple awesome melodies and so forth. I hear Beatles and it's like childrens stuff to me....but it has nothing to do with rock or rebellion or anything...great music, but Zeppelin pwns it...

It was jeff beck that named the band. He told jimmy page (his band mate in the Yardbirds) that his new project would sink like a 'lead zeppelin'
