Hi Folx...
THIS IS NOT AN EMPLOYMENT REQUEST!...
... I'm quoting some Flash stuff w/full DB connectivity which will be connected via a PHP file that actually is xml (easily parsed in flash)...
... I need a 'general' idea as to how much one would charge to:
1.) set up the DB
2.) set up the PHP to output xml to match my static xml (something I've pre-built and is already being parsed by flash)
3.) set up the CMS to update that data in the DB... I realize something like this is a custom project - the site is about 6 sections large...each section having maybe 3 subsections max...
... some imagery... some video... all I'd need are paths to those objects set up based on a static xml file(which will be provided by me before DB work even begins)...
... how many hours would you say are involved?
... would this be an hourly cost... or would this be a project cost?
... curious as to how you PHP/DB guys would quote this to someone who's got to quote his client

you tell me first.
...then i'll go to the client and say i can do it for cheaper! ;)
i really have no idea because i don't do any db or cms work, sorry.

max 4 hours for the xml, the CMS needs specifying

hmmm...
... let me rephrase...
... how long do 'you think' it would take to build a CMS/DB and output an xml file of that DB based on a static xml provided up-front?
Figure about 6 sections all w/2-3 subsections...
... also figure on one or two special node sections for video/image galleries

Damnit, cosmo... get out of bed and answer this!!!
hehe... i have someone waiting on a quote right at this very moment... :(

is flash hitting the php to get the xml (on the fly so to say), or just outputting the xml to a folder on the server?
- PonyBoy0
on the fly... the page will update w/a refresh (static xml requires you clear you cache sometimes... I'm sick of that issue...)... :)

DB design & setup = 2-4 hrs
Schema setup = 2 hrsThe cms has most of the big questions.
Multiple users? you'll need an admin area for the cms, not just the user area. Login page, forgot password functions, error page, display current entries, etc.? You've got a lot of different items that need to be answered before an accurate $$ can be given. The php request should be fairly easy. Say 4-8 hrs to be safe. since it's only getting the data from the db and formatting it based on the schema.
Flash, eh... getting and parsing the data, say 1-2 hrs. I don't know what you're going to do with it, so that is just getting the data into flash. Any sorting or anything and you add time. If it just displaying each node to a text box. Simple, say 4 hrs total, parsed and pushed onto stage.
I would call these estimates safe in terms of time. Add time for design and adding that design into flash/html.
The cms has most of the questions. completely rough estimate would be between 30-50+ hrs of development. Not sure exactly what it's doing, but, it's an estimate right?

ah... thank you, joyride! Insightful. :)... good general idea on time which is really all I needed.
