I'll soon have the means to move wherever I want. I'm thinking Tokyo. The problem is that I don't speak the language. Anybody here have experience living there?

language is a bitch to learn but you can do it if you're committed. I lived there when i was younger, studying in an international school but had japanese lessons at least once a day and by the end i could read and write an speak in a 'crude' way but i did do it...

so if I were some random guy living there how hard would it be to get by?
- menos0
i was only 11 when i lived there, so i cant really answer that. it depends what you wanna do. Im sure you can find something, nowadays there are lots of foreigners living there successfully... just keep in mind that tokyo is one of the most expensive cities in the world. and loads, i mean LOADS, of people, oh, and they drive on the left side ( i think)!

money wouldn't be a problem. I don't think I'd own a car either. would just live in a nice apartment in a swanky neighborhood.

(Oct 22 07, 13:08)That would be the expensive bit. Other than that the cost of living is pretty much the same with the big US cities. I thought prices were similar to living in NYC..except for the rent which is higher than NYC crazily enough.....

from what ive heard, Roppongi is still a cool neighborhood. bro was there visiting a friend in late 2004 and said it was wild, but all he did was go to trance parties etc so i don't think he got to assess the situation in the most objective mindset...

I've always heard that roppongi is a low life part of town.

talk to NT's PeterH
talk to NTs bukka, back when he started his site i linked roughly 20 sites all dealing specificly with moving to Japan and all the most important details in that you would need like finding a job, getting visa, getting electricity, getting an apartment, getting a driver's license, getting heat, getting laid, getting food, getting out of your country!!!!
talk to bukka, his site is teambukka.com i dont think he has the links on his site as it was but he definitely has the records of it...
i think he re-named the links to the "travel" section. although im not sure.

I moved to Bangkok in 2001 without knowing how to read, write, or speak thai. I eventually found a job that took me to Phuket.
I used jobsdb.com to find my original job and a second job when I decided I needed to get back.
I would highly recommend Bangkok. A perfect mix of traditional and modern. Very fun, safe, and exciting although you probably will be taking a gigantic cut in pay.
Easy to find a livable apartment for under $200 USD per month.
I would recommend SE Asia to anyone looking for quality of life.

(Oct 22 07, 13:44)i agree, but you must enjoy that kind of atmosphere/places. sadly, many people don't understand the meaning of 'quality of life'. they immediately translate it to big bucks!

I lived in Tokyo in the mid 90s "teaching" English. It was amazing, I didn't know Japanese when I moved there and after about 2 years, I could get by pretty well. I avoided Roppongi as well (lovingly called it "repugnant"). Not difficult to get around without Japanese, but it helps if you want to get to know the people and experience it more fully.

cool, thanks for the info. I firgure I could live there part of the year.

Lloyd don't miss out on the best part about making a move like this.
I got rid of EVERYTHING. Upon return I have nothing but a small bag of clothes and a laptop.
Nothing is the new everything

Lloyd is a prostitution broker.

--------------------------------Are you even modestly good looking and do you have a penis?
You'll get by fine. At least my friend Jeff has. You don't even have to open your mouth and the girls will be throwing themselves at you.
