well, trying at least...
starting with changing light bulbs.
Here's the problem, most CFL's render horrible light, like the yellowish tint kind... yuck. I have always used GE's Reveal bulbs, incandescent but have the purest, clean light I have seen.
LED's just aren't bright enough yet, and Halogens aren't the most efficient.
So where to go in nyc to buy some eco bulbs? does such a place exist other than shopping online?

there's a good lighting store on broadway in the NYU area, can't remember the name off hand

I don't think they truly compare to regular bulbs yet. hopefully soon.

we got some pretty nice warm phillips bulbs. they're a little too yellow for color reference, but they don't burn your retinas out

love my ott lite... don't know if it's "green" or not

the light bulbs WAY UP in my ceiling in my bathroom are embedded in these flat fixtures into the wall... the ceiling in the bathroom is vaulted so they're about 12-15' up...
... the last bulb went out about 2 months ago... now I only take showers during the day...
... I just realized my post has nothing to do with this thread... yet i'm going to press 'broadcast live' anyway. :)

no lightbulb is better than efficiant lightbulbs, porny.

wanna go green... go nadles and torches... only problem is that any chick that you bring to your apartment will either love it, which it might be scary, or freak out

i switched out 100% of the lightbulbs in our home with energy star bulbs.
i haven't had to change a bulb in 3 years, and from my home before i have 3 lamps with bulbs in them i guess are almost 5 years old.

my 2 cents
try not to take bags when they give them to you at the store for every little thing.
put in your own bag. bring your own bags to the supermarket. :)

i always ask for paper tara.
as an added bonus my cat loves when i bring home paper bags, i'll open them up and throw them on the floor and she goes nuts in them .haha.

there's a place called Tribeca lighting store that is like a mall sized store of lights. crazy big, sure you could find what you are looking for there.

goto home depot on 23rd street, their home section is just when you walk in to the left, its large and they have every style bulb you can want for your newly green needs, i have recently purchased those bulbs that last years and they are great!!! they dont take any time to light up and they come in warm and soft bright and tinted, a much better selection than anything offered years ago when these lights first hit the markets.
congrats to changing yoru ways and really the best part is you wont have to buy bulbs ever again.
ask for help from one of those guys in an orange apron.

Cool, will check out the tribeca store and home depot. Just surprised there isn't a "green" home store with all your needs, especially since everyone is touting switching over, etc.
My gut feeling after researching them, and trying a few, is that CFL's are just not there yet. Ever wonder why art galleries and museums still use halogens and traditional lighting? They won't switch until the color rendering is equal to, or succeeds that of Halogens.
All these companies have proclaimed their CFL's are full spectrum, soft white, etc, but I have yet to come across one not being yellow, or commercial cold white. I will check out the phillips ones, though, and GE's offerings.
For people in the arts, and graphics, the quality of light shouldn't be something to sacrifice after all in order to go green. Unfortunately, I will have to wait it seems until the market improves a bit more.
However, if someone is in a similar position, and has found a good CFL/LED light bulb that is equal to GE's Reveal brand, hit me up!!!
