hello all,
i have been trying to find articles about remote usability testing and how effective it is. basically, i am trying to find guidelines/norms for this type of testing(surveys, feedback, etc.)any ideas? ive been searching for some time.

We do remote usability tests all the time. We have to come up with a better paced script to account for delays when using remote servers and screen recording. But beyond that it depends on what and how you plan to test.

i want to test a site with goal oriented tasks and essentially ask how difficult it was to complete the tasks. i dont know how effective text feedback would be?

Assuming a Windows environment:
You could set up a net meeting or some other screen sharing program, get them on the phone, and email them a series of tasks to accomplish. Then watch how they do and ask them to narrate their actions. Take notes and record the screen.

hmm...i was thinking more along the lines of web survey. its for senior project and i really dont have a lot of time to set up the test. i was thinking just have them fill out a survey, doesnt matter what platform they are on as the site will render correctly.

In that case you want to set up a web survey that asks users to rate their experience on various aspects of the task. For example:
Task: Send an email to customer support. When you feel you have finished this task continue to the next page. If you come to a point where you feel this task cannot be accomplished, continue to the next page.
Next Page:
1. Do you feel the task was successfully completed? Why or why not?
Yes or no
2. What in particular indicated that you had finished the task?
Text entry
3. How easy do you feel this task was to finish?
1 - 10
From this point you could have the user rate various parts of the task, user experience, design, overall site, code, etc. That would give you measureable metrics you could compile and show averages or trends.

Bump.
I've been looking for a system that enables remote user testing. So far the best I've come up with was just using GoToMeeting.
Has anyone found anything good that allows for remote testing that also records audio and video?
