I don't get it.

Aesthetically, I like the simple look of fixed gear bikes. I don't ride them or bikes for that matter, but have friends who are heavy into fixed gear. It's an interesting subclulture for sure.

Wouldn't you get the same effect staying in the same gear on any other bike?

(Oct 16 07, 11:31)no, because a regular bike freewheels. fixed = no freewheel. again, hard to explain, you just need to try it.
- czawada0
jox: no freewheel means that when you stop pedaling the crank arms continue to rotate as if you were pedaling. Hence being able to stop better and control your speed better as well.

brakes stop better than your legs.

Yeah, I was out jogging the other day, and I saw some dude and two hot chicks riding fixed gear bikes (fucking n00bz riding on the wrong side of the street and on the sidewalk none-the-less!). Anyway, the chicks, regardless of being hot, looked like they didn't even know how to spell the word exercise, much less participate in it. So yeah, fixed gear bikes + Vegas = trendy.

"Regardless of being hot" = Point digs fatties.

fixed gears were the original form of bicycle, so it's not like it's a new thing. it's unfortunate that it's been recently co-opted by the ass clown crew

(Oct 16 07, 11:49)Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well. So "Hard to explain" could've been rephrased as "Like a BMX works", no?
: )

cycling is one of those sports where it's difficult to judge one's fitness or ability by their size. some fatties can ride like the wind, it's a center of gravity thing methinks

jox
(Oct 16 07, 11:50)well, not quite, because you can never stop pedaling as long as the wheel is turning, at least my bmx you could, and it had a coaster brake!

I don't understand why they just don't call them track bikes, that is what they are in essence.

Got any pics of your bike acescence? I'd like to see :)

(Oct 16 07, 11:54)all track bikes are fixed, but not all fixed are track bikes. there are standards that qualify it as track. they won't let me on the track with most of my bikes.
- mrdobolina0
I also don't understand why people ride them, but whatever.
I have ridden them before and while they are pretty fun it is no wonder why it is the law in most cities that you need brakes on your bike. Not every rider is capable of stopping on a dime without brakes.

Acescense, I got rid of my General Lee Cruiser and got a Mosh 24 inch cruiser. The thing is sweet, all blacked out.

Cool enough. Thanks for the info.

it's the "it" thing now. White belt a requirement.
