I am currently getting ready to send out some new promos and looking for some advice from the AD's and designers on here. Am I wasting my time by trying to send out printed promos to prospective clients? do you even look at these and then take the next step to say viewing their portfolio online? Or is it rude to send some sort of email promo or a link to work cold to someone? bacically tryiing to scare up more magazine work. any thoughts would be appreciated ...

Just remember this ... you are not the only one. Firms get crap daily, some great stuff some really poor.
You have to somehow push yourself to the front. How you do that is up to you. It is no different if you are trying to be a published author, you just send your script/story to all possible publishers hoping one will give that big break.
good luck.

are you sending to Boulder agencies, or just denver?

not really denver or boulder.. I am guess i am looking at getting my work in front of people where ever. Denver/boulder i could easily just go in.. I have just read peoples accounts of sending out printed promos without anybody even looking at them. It has been my experience with previous printed promos. or maybe the question should be "How do AD's find new talent?" I have tried source.. black book etc.. i had some luck.. not a lot.. part of it had to do with my Rep who turned down work for me that i would have loved to do.. namely Wired mag..

your work is really original, focus on a way to get it and keep it in front of your audience. maybe a promo card that folds into a poster, calendar (kinda cheese but could work), magnet, mousepad, etc. Anything that might not get thrown away or immediately filed.

it does work, especially for illustrators and photogs, well organised good studios keep all good promos filed relevant to style, experience & specialty...

...alright, so a promo card could work, but just in case throw in a custom lighter so when they are lighting up what ever they smoke they will think of your work every time.

you got great work going on there. maybe you could even go as far as sending a small brochure, a lot of printers can do these for a fair price these days.

thanks for the responses.. I have received a lot of positive feedback in regards to the behind the scenes stuff.. the brochure idea sounds interesting.. maybe i can do something with the behind the scenes with a brochure.. i did not intend this to be about my work :) but thanks.. by the way.. i just did a interview over at phirebrush..
