Whatever happened? Back in 90s, Virtuality Ltd. had products out there (expensive ones, in arcades, mostly), running off Amigas, but now - nothing? I don't understand why not - processing power is more than capable, goggles can be hi-enough res, motion sensing is a doddle.. most games are specifically built in 3D - so why nothing?
Anyone know of anything out there? Anything practical and consumer-focused?
I don't care if it makes me feel queasy after a couple of hours - I end up hollow-stomached and shaky after the stress of prolonged gaming sessions anyway...

Whats the point of it?
- that's kind of what they said about personal computers before they came outmoldero

Thanks for that, DragoLatino - I hadn't Googled for 'Head Mounted Displays' - turns out there's quite a few products out there.. I just haven't seen it as part of the mainstream for years.
One thing I've always wanted is a 'Fruityloops' in VR - to be able to pull and warp sound in 3d space - merge different timelines and intuitively play the tune as it goes on.. *creams self

What was the movie where they were trying to get into a hotel room to use some VR file system thing, where they would search it flying through a bunch of idiotic storage devices and such?
F'ing stupid! There's you answer for why you don't see that stuff much then, the visuals made everyone sick!

- That film was a fucking embarrassment. What's worse is Gibson wrote the screenplay.Continuity

SecondLife is like a mass baby-step towards VR.

OK, so the hardware's out there - but what about the software?
I don't know of any games that are compatible - nor any sites or works - anyone here know of anything?
Anyone ever had any involvement?

We were using VR since about 10 yrs ago for regular design reviews at General Motors Design, mainly large wall displays and the CAVE for showing interiors (with polarizing goggles for the stereo bit, cheaper for presenting to like 20 people at once)... but immersive VR seems to have stalled about 1997?
I tried a system with (huge) head-mounted goggles and force-feedback gloves at Siggraph...see here:
http://www.cardesignnews.com/sit…Seems like all the hardware bits work fine, sense of being in that space was really strong, but the model displayed was a bit basic, looks like its just a case of developing the particular application more, and getting people to want it and to pay for the software/product development..
For immersive games... I want flight and driving simulators... easy to do since there's no walking to simulate...

lol, this is a major bump

Industrial and scientific uses haven't stopped, I'm sure its only gotten more prevalent as tech has progressed. But yeah commercially it has been side tracked. I think because initially it was really amazing and high tech but became a trivial gimmick as the net and DVD and gaming consoles etc were quickly reaching their potential and were easily mass produced and marketed.

buy a new build house now days and the contractor will likely show you a virtual tour of your floor plan, if on a computer you'll be able to wander around on your own.
also virtual reality is used a lot in mining and drilling to explore geosurveys deep into the ground for density changes before ever drilling an inch
as far as gaming? no better today that it was 10 years ago as far as public offerings imo

well ps3 already has 3d games, seems like all they need to do is introduce goggles that use sensors to track head movement. game play would use the move controls.
it's all easily within our realm of capability, i think people are just gun-shy because of what happened with nintendo's virtual boy (which i had, and it was AWESOME)
- virtualboy was awesome?! omg it was shit. Everything was red and nothing was actually 3dDodecahedron
- it was the 90s man, game boy had only one color too, and it was totally 3d! expecting CoD on it is ridiculousscarabin
