From Trent...
"Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the
following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very
different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a
direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate. Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008. Exciting times, indeed."

It's going to be interesting to see what happens. will NIN go via the Radiohead route with their next release?
- madirish0
this is awesome.
- mrdobolina0
should be very interesting, I reckon NIN could make tons of money just touring...
- PonyBoy0
ooo... nice!
more power to them...
... are they just doing their own promotion... or are they actually starting a 'label' of sorts and will eventually sign talent?

he and chris are going on a street tour of chicago playing buckets and acoustic guitar

Watch, the bands who have been around for a long time will be able to pull a huge success with this sort of thing.
All the new young bands who will see this as their ticket to stardom will fail miserably. They'll think "I can put my album on the web for free and people can make whatever donation they feel like" will put them on the map.

will they stay 'true' to their anti-RIAA ways though?...... this wouldn't be the first time the 'employees' have started something on their own only to do the same damn thing...
... i'd really like to see some change... nahmean?
Like... when a few really good designers ditch working for 'the man' and start their own shit...
... then BAM!... ten years go back and you can't tell the diff. between their company and the company they ditched to start something 'new'.

True Pony!
First you stick it to the man...and in doing so...become the man
it's a viscious cycle

I wouldn't worry about Trent becoming "The Man". The guy ran Nothing Records (Marylin Manson, 12 Rounds, Meat Beat Manifesto, Pig, The The, etc.) for many years until his business partner (and then "best friend"), John Malm Jr. stole millions of $$$ from him. After that, Trent decided to close down Nothing Records due to the whole legal issue with his now ex-business partner owning part of the company. So Trent has done it before, he'll still be the same guy. I doubt he'll be signing other talent like he did before with Nothing Records, he seems like he's past managing/worrying about other bands. I would think he just wants to focus on NIN this time around.

they have no excuse but to rock. ill be waiting for it! i just hope they dont fuck this up.

Nice move Trent. Too bad he hasn't made a truly great album since The Downward Spiral.

Tool is next

though trent is very into tech, hes also into the printing and design aspect of all of his albums i doubt he will ever release a internet only album, perhaps like radiohead though he will release a special addition for the fans that like the physical material. also all of his releases have always been under nothing records which was a label he started i believe, so im sure he will still be using that as his release label.

UKIT, I would argue that The Fragile (1999) was, to me at least, the second best NIN album. Pretty Hate Machine is #1 for me. Unfortunately, many people never had enough patience for The Fragile since it was a double album with no true singles on it. I think that record is a true masterpiece, that was never given its' due.

I listened to it a bit when it came out and liked it, but it never stuck with me like the first three. I felt like he kind of hit a creative block in terms of what to do with his sound over the past several years. Agree with you on Pretty Hate Machine, and the short-but-sweet Broken is good for some angsty mid-afternoon moshing as well:)

man, it would be nice to see that yolk fall away and let the talent rise to the surface.
that was the whole idea behind record companies in the first place (separate the chaff from the wheat) but it's turned out my label have shit for taste from the get-go.
*much love from those that love 'good' music.
