never understood this. In illustrator on the align window, you have 2 options to distribute spacing: auto or a specified measure. why can't i ever get the specified measure to work? it always says to select a key object blah blah... or to set it to auto...
Basically, I wish it would work like it does in InDesign!

It's pretty straightforward.
Select all the ojects you want to distribute...then select the "key object"...usually just the first object in your distibution and then enter the amount of spacing.
Simple as that

re. Illy align.. also make sure your objects are not grouped.

marychain: i think im doing what you said but it doenst work... because if i select all the object, and then select the key object that object will become deselected and therefore the distribution wont work....
mirrorball: indesign works like a charm. what exactly is the prob you're having?

marychain,

once all objects are SELECTED just CLICK on the key object. dont select it, just click on it. then align.
