ive been using netbarrier for a couple of years now and dont seem to have any problems with it (that i can tell of, anyway) but was wondering if there are any good alternatives that might have been tried and tested.thanks in advance

maybe it's too basic, but os x has a firewall built in.
otherwise, you could go the command line route and setup iptables.
other than that, not sure... sorry

here's a good tutorial on writing your own rules via the cl with the built-in firewall

wow thats some pretty 'hardcore' firewall system.. for me at least...had no idea this could be done!
its not that im really in need of one, its more curiosity about whats out there and reccomended by users...
but thanks!

OS X firewall works good for me.
.. in your system prefs under Sharing.

OSXX firewall should do everything you need, and if you want to do more complex port mapping (like redirecting a public port to a private port) you would usually do it at the router rather than on a single Mac.

try flying buttress it is a gui that tweaks the built in firewall. Little hard to use( setting up rules was not intuitive for me) at first, but it's free and steps things up a notch
