I need to buy some stock photos for a project and I'd like to know much to charge the customer for the photo. I know i can't resell the photo but I invested time researching and looking for the appropriate image. Should I charge it as part of the design process in my invoice?

i generally buy my photos from istockphoto.com
almost everything I need is under $5.
I charge clients for the time I spend searching for images. If I only buy a few I eat the cost but if I need to buy a lot of shit I add it to the invoice as an additional fee.

Marking up stock photos is common practice. Like you said, you spent time doing research and you need to compensated for that.
I've seen them marked up anywhere from 25-45%

I think i'll do just that.

25-45%?!
That's good to know.
I use a lot of stock photos for the agency i freelance for but they buy 'em and charge the client. This is the first time I'm buying directly.

just an FYI...I believe most of the cheap stock photo licenses do not allow re-selling at a marked up value.
obviously no one would ever really know, but technically it's not allowed....at least with the istockphoto basic license.
