i have a gradient from white to light gray (illustrator cs3). gradient is not "smooth" (has one really big step). is there some way around it?

screenshot?

if this is for print, you will not see it on output, it's a limitation of your monitor

Is there not a pref for changing steps? Alternatively is it just your screen can't handle the difference. Check info in photoshop - it may actually be alright but too sensitive for your screen to pick up.

uhoh, should have checked on another machine before posting. it looks there. so what's the problem?
- elms0
it looks there. => it look OK there.

*looks...

possible explanations-
- color is not set to 24bit
- monitor not properly calibrated
- video card is crap
- monitor is crapyou can try recalibrating or switching monitors around to try to isolate the source
- elms0
thanks
have to recalibrate my monitor

make a pdf and open it in acrobat or preview... this will also give you a more precise view..
but with gradients...always make a colorproof...especially with those subtle ones...it easily looks like dirt or paper fade away by the light...
- elms0
it's not a print job. doing a website design over a very long time...

I had a 23" Cinema display with the same problem. Just got myself a brand new one because you can't calibrate your way out of it. It's a factory fault
- elms0
really?
i have 15" macbook pro...

take it to the store and demand a new screen or MBP. They can't say no
- elms0
have to do it anyway, the screens right edge is darker. you know how long it will take replacing the screen?
- designerror0
anything from 1 to 4 weeks
sucks when it's your daily workhorse
- elms0
ok.
cheers, designerror

you could also try using the blend tool.
you can create two rectangles (or whatever shape) and use the blend on them and then set the steps to as many as you'd like.
I'll explain more if you want to try it.

thanks, eb6
but it still gives the same result as gradient, doesnt matter how many steps.
- designerror0
is it the last grey before white?
- BaskerviIle0
if it's not a print job why not just do it in photoshop?
