Guys,
What, in your opinion, is the best* open source ecommerce software?
best*
Highly configurable
Ease of use (both front end - customisation - and back-end - stock control etc)
Standards aware
Leans towards CSS (not tables)
Is in at least v1.0My current fav is Magento - http://www.magentocommerce.com but it's still in beta.
Something like a cross between oscommerce and Magento would be best, i presume.

Our studio uses MIVA merchant. Its kind of a pain at times, but it seems to get the job done ok. I hesitate to recommend it though, because I feel that there should be better ones out there.
I don't think there is ever going to be a single perfect solution. Your best bet is to pick one system and learn the ins and outs of it.
...obviously easier said than done.

i use oscommerce a fair bit but it's a pain having to convert all the tables each time (depending on what the client wants of course) which is why I am looking for something a bit ... fresher shall we say.

I have to agree with you on Magento. I honestly haven't seen anything near as flexible and feature rich in the open-source space.
Sorry.

Haven't used it in 18 months or so, but I'd back up Digi_Lee's OSCommerce recommendation.
I'm no hardcore coder, but I managed to completely convert it from a tabular off-the-shelf site into my own floating div'd css site.
There's a great community and oodles of plugins. BUT if you're not comfortable with code, it'd probably be be a bit of a nightmare.
