So it's The Klaxons that have scooped the £20,000 prize this year.
How wasted were they when they picked up the award and being interviewed afters. definitely looked like the singer was on one or two E's as he was gurning like hell. lol.
Good on them though as they were up against some pretty good albums like Amy's "Back to Black" and JamieT's offering.

I watched the awards last night as I always do. I was shocked and appalled at the predominantly low standard of ability and performance. Bands like the Young Knives sound like they were only given their first instruments a week ago and have never even heard music before. Many others were hardly better. I though Bat for Lashes really stood out as different and actually talented.
But for the most part all the act were the same – indie guitar bands with little talent.
Then you have dizzie rascal who is purported to have 'witty, inciteful' lyrics and just talks about grinding for his whole song. As good as amy winehouse's voice is, her albums are all just early jazz pastiches, nothing new or innovative there.so how is all of this the future of music? It really made arctic monkey stand out as talented for their age and songwriting and even musicianship.
I don't see how any of it was anything we haven't heard before (unless you count not being able to play).I do feel sorry for the Klaxons though, this is from the BBC website, it seems they're pissed off that even after winning the press are still talking about amy:
Were they surprised to have beaten Amy? "No," came the immediate response from Jamie.
"I thought that she gave a fantastic performance and I absolutely love her record.
"But her record is a retro record and we've made the most forward-thinking record in I don't know how long.
"I think that's what the Mercury is about, and not about a retro record, so I think we deservedly beat Amy Winehouse."
James added: "It was quite a shame that every question we got asked today was about whether Amy Winehouse was going to win the award.
"It took the focus away from the fact that the Mercury Music Prize is about music."
oh dear, even alternative music which is supposed to influence the mainstream is becoming mainstream and overhyped now.

I find this quote interesting:
"I think that's what the Mercury is about, and not about a retro record, so I think we deservedly beat Amy Winehouse."
considering Klaxons are a band who built themselves on covering 17yr old Rave tracks?!
- BaskerviIle0
haha too true doddster

(Sep 5 07, 00:54)Not true, doddster.
They only sampled rave tracks for 'Alantis to interzone' and covered 'Not over yet' - A brilliant cover, I might add.
The rest of their album is very well written and musically quite original. Deserved winners, IMO.
I think the best thing about Amy's album is the production. Mark Ronson is keeping musical arrangement for pop alive - Definitely a good thing.
- Raniator0
Eh? So they covered some tracks – that's what he said!
- Concrete0
He said tracks, plural. Only one track was a cover and this was the last of 4 singles they released.
So they didn't really build themselves on covering 17yr old rave tracks did they?
- Raniator0
Yeah, ok... take the 's off then :-P
I'm just glad Arctic Monkeys didn't win it... would have been the first time an artist wins it twice. That would have been a right royal fuck up if you ask me. They must have known they stood no chance of getting it again.
Bat for Lashes or Jamie T should have nailed it, I think.
- kezza_20
Jamie T should of won it for me.
- Concrete0
Jamie T is talented, and his songs have a certain charm. But all these middle class cockney singer songwriters sound a bit contrived to me.
Bat For Lashes have a good sound, her voice is sickly sweet and I like the writing style, I just don't think it's massively original.

klaxons are the most overrated band part of this entirely overrated nu rave scene.

(Sep 5 07, 03:05)Amen.
I just don't really get them. I know the industry has been kissing their ass from day one, and some have my mates have been raving (pardon the pun) about the album for ages, but it really doesn't do anything for me.
Just sounds like a a bunch of kids fucking about with instruments they can't use who were incredibly lucky to get a record deal...
...ahh, there it is then.
- neue75_bold0
I dunno, I tried to buy a couple of their 12"s last week and just couldn't do it...
I'm not sure what all the hype is about either...
I'm slowly getting into this whole electro indie pop stuff, but there's a ton of others out there that are way more listenable...
- BaskerviIle0
When 14 yearold kids can play this well, I expect quite a bit more from professional musicians, people who have record deals.
Each generation should get better than the last and I just think bands today are lazy, all the best musicians become session players and then get stuck playing on spice girls records etc

They had a cover of that Shut up and Dance Tune - Peter the Bouncer on their myspace ages ago. Was a bit of novelty having heard the original quite a bit back in the "proper" rave days ;)
- kelpie0
ha. Sons and Daughters (The Best Band in Britain) played Adamski in their set in Inverary the other day and it was awesome.
Take yer Nu Rave and get tae fuck.
