I watched the awards last night as I always do. I was shocked and appalled at the predominantly low standard of ability and performance. Bands like the Young Knives sound like they were only given their first instruments a week ago and have never even heard music before. Many others were hardly better. I though Bat for Lashes really stood out as different and actually talented.
But for the most part all the act were the same – indie guitar bands with little talent.
Then you have dizzie rascal who is purported to have 'witty, inciteful' lyrics and just talks about grinding for his whole song. As good as amy winehouse's voice is, her albums are all just early jazz pastiches, nothing new or innovative there.

so how is all of this the future of music? It really made arctic monkey stand out as talented for their age and songwriting and even musicianship.
I don't see how any of it was anything we haven't heard before (unless you count not being able to play).

I do feel sorry for the Klaxons though, this is from the BBC website, it seems they're pissed off that even after winning the press are still talking about amy:

Were they surprised to have beaten Amy? "No," came the immediate response from Jamie.

"I thought that she gave a fantastic performance and I absolutely love her record.

"But her record is a retro record and we've made the most forward-thinking record in I don't know how long.

"I think that's what the Mercury is about, and not about a retro record, so I think we deservedly beat Amy Winehouse."

James added: "It was quite a shame that every question we got asked today was about whether Amy Winehouse was going to win the award.

"It took the focus away from the fact that the Mercury Music Prize is about music."

oh dear, even alternative music which is supposed to influence the mainstream is becoming mainstream and overhyped now.
