It blocks any traffic until you allow it.

you might want to use an access control list by MAC address (in your router setup), and only turn that function off when you want to allow a guest to connect. You can make firewall exceptions for all your services that need to get through, but this is totally seperate to 'connected users'.

you can also use Airport client manager to see connections. additionally in Finder go to:
Go>Network>Servers
and you will see all machines with a *visible* MAC address there.

click on "netstat" tab
click "display state of current socket connections" and then the netstat button
