iTunes Syncing

So if I keep my music/movies on an external hard drive, but I want to download some new content without having the hard drive with me, will it erase what's currently there and replace it with new content or will it keep both?
FYI, I'm doing this on an iPhone...not sure if that matters compared to an iPod.
Any suggestions?

Be careful. Make sure to backup all music files before attempting anything. iTunes is known for producing vague messages and then replacing the new stuff with the older playlists.

Sorry, not necessarily the files themselves, but save the playlists or other info you may have.

It's those vague messages I'm worried about. I'm not afraid of losing the files since they're all on my external, I just don't have it with me, so I'm afraid of losing what's currently on there until I can get to my external. Problem is I'm going away tonight and won't be back til next week and I don't want to get stuck with just a new movie and no music on this trip.
Stupid vague messages!

The worst thing that can happen is losing all your music files. Since that is unlikely to happen, just make copies of the music you have on your computer first in case something goes wrong. Then try to sync.

well not sure how it is on the iphone but on itunes I have the same deal with my ipod and you can drop music on itunes without being plugged to the drive and it will just add the content to your lolac playlist, not sure why would you think it will erase your current content, but then again I never used an iphone.

I think this is more simple than I first believed, if I am understanding Meeklo correctly. Just back up the local files in case something happens, and then go for it.

You can't drag and drop media onto the iPhone, you have to sync to playlists so... I'd create a playlist with the new content you want to have, name the playlist that is something unique so it doesn't confuse it with any playlist that may already on the phone. Plug the beatch in and sync.
I don't think it will just delete all the other playlists that are already on the phone.
No guarentees though :)

Thanks for the sugs.
Yeah, I'm not sure it'll delete it, but it's kinda risky and I have a 5 hour flight. I'm debating over possibly losing hours of music so I can download a 2 hour movie.
The music files aren't on my computer (I have a laptop with me) they're at home on the external. And they're on my iPhone but they prob is the iPhone needs to sync to update, so it might lose the files since it won't be able to find them. I'm not sure it will, just not sure if I'm willing to take that chance.
Oh, well, I guess hours of music, and a couple eps of Flight of the Conchords may have to hold me over.

If I'm not mistaken, can't you choose to just sync movies? ... thus, leaving your music playlist intact?
if I'm wrong, and iTunes syncs music and video, then yes, you will lose your music currently on your phone and be left with only the movie.

My bad Cinco... I just plugged my phone into my machine here at work. iTunes syncs both music and movies at the same time, so yes, if you get a new movie and sync it to your phone you will lose your playlist.

oh! I'm stupid (we already knew that) . There's a video tab at the end that you can upload video separately. You're good to go and shouldn't lose your music!
