when initiating the discovery period in your companies design process, how do you go about getting feedback on a clients likes/dislikes in site design? or do you just "wing it".
Interested to learn about the different processes out there..

wing it. Companies only know what they like when they see it....at least in my experience....but im barely average.

I provide proofs up front that are very different and see what they go for. This shapes things down the line.

Something conservative
Something outlandish
Something postmodern
Something garish
Something just for meBut of course I'm just talking about the shits I take each morning of the work week. What was the question about?

i usually ask them about their competitors. what they do with their site, what they like about their competitors site, what they don't, what they would improve on and what they want to do that they don't.
i try to get an idea about their likes by asking about some sites, not competitor related that they like. helps me get an idea what type of site they're interested in.
for instance, a certain site could tell me they like the information architecture of lots of info on a page, or, a nice clean corporate straight forward layout.
i usually do 3 concepts of design, 2 that are a bit more than what they are looking for and a third that really pushed the envelope in terms of design. sometimes a client may think they want one thing but see another and totally go for it.
really, a lot of this shit you just have to wing and learn with/from experience.
there really is no set way. each client is different. some you can get a complete feel for just by looking around their office at the art on the wall and such.
i'm tired. why am i writing all this? good luck surfwired.
