If anyone here has a 17" power book with the serial starting W85, you in for a nice surprise, you have a good chance of developing Horizontal Lines down your screen. Mine started with the one and with a matter of weeks I now have four.
Bets bit is apple don’t care or want to know if your out of warranty....... right laugh!
Before you ask, I haven't dropped it and have a apple sleeve to protect it, so its well looked after.
Shame I was about to buy a couple more Macs for the office, but im having second thoughts.
Anyone else experience this yet????

yes.
it is the video card de-soldering from the logic board. it is fixable and will be covered if under warrenty.
additionally, if it is the 1st gen of the 17", it could be the wiring getting brittle at the lid hinge. but doubtful as they were already upgraded from the previous design.
good luck.

Goddamit. My PowerBook at home is starting with W85... It's the last rev 1.67.
Why am I not surprised? Just about everything else has been replaced or is currently broken, it was only a matter of time before the screen gave in, too.
And this particular computer has, despite being a laptop, never left the house, but has served as a backup/TV hookup thingy for about 16 months.

I'm in the same boat... It's called the Briget Riley effect... the thing that piss me off if some Dell laptop got the same 17 display on them, from the same chinesse factory, the same month and Dell did acknowledged the problem and replace the screen for free...

Haha... I love it when people moan about this sort of stuff.
"I've got a 5 year old laptop, and now it's got a few dead pixels" or some shit...

Dam that must be a nightmare. And to think you have to pay a premium for an Apple Powerbooks.
I think apple build quality is slowly going down hill. The most worrying problem is how they are dealing with customers when the products are out of warranty. If it is a mass problem with powerbooks then Apple should put there hands up, and sort out the problem.
At least DELL did.
