but I'm not digging the design of the IHT homepage. It's taken a big step backwards in regards to interface functionality and aesthetics, IMHO.
Thoughts?
(I'll probably get hit with a timeline... not sure when this redesign took place or who did it)

it's not the new york times but it's what most newspapers are going for these days. at least here (europe) a lot of them are.

I guess I just liked to older navigational structure a bit more. It was a bit less obtrusive and was more secondary to the content. This navigation is much thicker and bolder... takes up a ton more vertical realestate. My thought is that it should take a backseat to the content...

i was once involved in a study for adapting paper to web - and the main issue was how to avoid the nav being diluted in the vertical overall feel of the page. horizontal nav is good if you can manage to have a somewhat reduce index but it starts taking up some space if you have by default. e.g. nyt.com uses horizontal nav inside the sections, thus reducing its size.
