Ok, I have a laptop with that has most of my mp3s from an external drive, this way the mp3 don't eat up space on my computer and they synch to the ipod.
I got a new computer and I want to transfer all the songs to it, the ones on the hardrive and the ones on the computer, is there a way to synch up playlist to an external drive, then transfer that to my other computer?
if not, how would you do it?
I would like to keep ratings and playlists.thanks in adv

You could try copying your current iTunes folder over to your new computer. That should keep the playlists.
But then you will have to go back and relink all the media that was on your external drive (if you are wanting to move it all to the new computer and not just link to the external again)

When I moved from a PC to a Mac it was a pain in the ass. The file locations were different so I just copied everything into my iTunes Music folder and synced it up. I had to re-do everything (checkmarking songs, playlists, download podcasts, etc.)
I would also like to know more info about this, although when I searched around I couldn't find many risk-free solutions.

I think if you just move your old library file to your new computer, you should be fine.
It would be referencing your external drive the same way your old computer did.
I'm not totally sure about this because I had almost the same set up last year. I replaced my external hard drive, named it the same thing, moved all the songs and folders into the new drive, expecting to have everything, work, but I got nothing but exclamation points next to every track. (about 15,000 songs)

Hmmm...I would also think that it should work since it's on an external HD. Makes sense.
Did the tracks still work when you double-clicked on them, CyBrain? I'm assuming not.

(Aug 10 07, 09:51)I already know that's not going to work, there are tracks on my 1st laptop that are not on the external drive and the other way around..
I dowbt that a simple export library will sync tracks on both drives.. it might keep the playlist order and ratings.. but thats it..

exporting didn't work for me. I got the exclamation marks everywhere + other errors.

(Aug 10 07, 10:19)right, exporting is just the lists and orders, it does nothing with the actual files.

move the entire directory over and then on startup, hold down option key and it will prompt which playlist you want to use. selct new location and then this is the new default.
or, copy directory over and then manually change the playlist location in the preferences pane under advanced tab.
