(Aug 10 07, 04:43)Get this, 2 days ago I get a phone call in the evening:
"Hello mr Emecks?"
"Yeeees...."
"I am calling from the Halifax building society, regarding the changes you requested..."
I had no reason to suspect anything, it is my bank after all and I am getting some stuff changed....
"Before I continue I need to ask you some security questions:
can you confirm your address for me please?"I did.
"And can you confirm your previous address?"
I did.
"Erm no, we've got something here starting with 36...."
"I have never ever lived ANYWHERE starting with 36".
"Let me call you back after I get this sorted"
they never called back, is this an attempt at getting information from me to steal my identity?

i would say..... yes.
maybe.
definitly entriguing.
good thing you didn't recognize my voice....
- madirish0
but honestly- i would look into your bank(s) and maybe credit to ensure this was a routine inquiry.

Definitely phone your bank and ask them to confirm they were calling you. If not, tell them about the call you did get.

Its been known that this is how it can happen. I'd give them a call back asap.

why would you give out your information to some stranger on the phone???? Banks almost never call customers. Next time they call just hang up, if it is important they'll send you a letter.
Just in case, if you get an email from a guy in Nigeria offering you a job or to receive some money just ignore it...
;)

There are some weirdos who call us from time to time as well and they know a suspicious amount of information about our family. My mom just tells them off, usually with screaming and swearing.

I'm normally pretty clued up to scams, but the thing is we are busy changing things with our bank and they said they were from our bank (halifax)
It was only afterwards I thought, hang on I've given information that identifies me, they've not done the same to me.

called them:
"hello bankCunt?"
"yeees"
"It says here you have my accounts, can you confirm some details for me please...."
hehe
