...does anyone know if it is possible to create an effect of extruded object in after effects?
Basically I am trying to make a simple object looked as though it is a raised off the panel underneath it.
I tried it using shatter - with no forces etc... but it didn't seem to work!
any ideas?
...please?

I can think of two things, but involved some finagling.
1: Use the 3D effects in Illustrator, flatten the art and import.
2: Get ahold of a plugin for AE, called Zaxwerks 3D. Use it import AI files and standrad 3D files. That will def. work.

but it will always look...fake..
best use c4D for this.3D in AE is like 3D in photoshop.

You can also try making many many 3D layers of the object and offsetting them in Z-zpace by a picel or two ... this is a cheap but effective way to make an extrusion ...
There's a great tutorial on it ... can't find it now but I'll look later ...

No if done right, that Zaxwerks plugin can be pretty damn good. Obviously not the same power as a real 3d app, but for simpler stuff, it's awesome.

Trapcode echospace can do the above mentioned layering of multiple planes to make an extrusion. Works pretty well and keeps those layer in good order and manageable.

make a a precomp of a cube, or what simple object u need.
throw it in a new comp and collapse the layer of the precomp.
than put a camera on the comp,
and put DOF on and a high aperture.this is what i did before i learned a bit of 3D.
