CS3 upgrade problem?

I'm trying to install a CS3 Design Standard upgrade onto a colleague's Mac.
We've got CS1 Design Premium to upgrade from and I've got to the bit where I put in the old serial number. Nothing. Won't upgrade. Says it's the wrong number or something.
So I look on the box and there is a website which tells me what I can upgrade from:
http://www.adobe.com/go/upgradei…
...and it tells me that you can upgrade from CS1 Standard 1.x, Premium 1.x etc...
AND from standalone versions of software – Photoshop etc.
That doesn't work either.
Anyone else had a similar problem? Are Adobe lying to me?
Sorry to waffle on, but it's pissing me and my colleague off now!
Thanks.

I had the same problem trying to use CS3 beta.
My version of CS2 was an upgrade install - neither that serial nor the cs1 serial worked.
After bouncing from Adobe to CS Team to specialist i found myself in an endless loop of call forwards to eachother so gave up.
fortunately since the macromedia aquisition i can base my cs3 upgrade on ownership studio 8 when i purchase it (next week)
