Okay I have a situ I'm not quite sure how to deal with - I'll explain.
I got a new client, quoted him for a job. Took a third up front. The schedule was to finish the job (and be payed the rest) by July 1st.
It's June 21st, production should have started this week but still haven't had content for the site from him. Get phonecall.
Their plans have changed, they want to postpone the website and get me going on another one. They still want the project in question doing - but by around september.
Problems I am faced with:
How much to charge? They said they'd default and pay whatever I've already worked.
Is it best to charge for resources commited in good faith, including time spent, and then when they want the site to resume development to quote again?
Hosting. I found a host for him, but rather than him dealing with it he said for me to sort it out, put a margin on it, and invoice him. I've set up the hosting but not invoiced him yet. What's the best way of approaching this?
How would you deal with this?
Please offer your advice, I'd be so so grateful.
I am in the UK.
Phil

Sounds like a nice client.
Just charge them for what you have done/spent on everything already. Accompany it with a detailed breakdown. Hosting, + your margins included. (for hosting I normally set aside a few more extra hours for setup maintenance etc.. & treat that as my margin - then it doesn't look to sus)
Then treat the next phase as a new job.
Sounds fair to me - you've done the work, just because they've pulled the job doesn't mean you shouldn't get what you deserve.

milo's right, then if there's anything left from the advance after your startup costs, push it towards the new project.
