Magic Johnson

I don't know. For some reason I started thinking about Magic Johnson today. I saw him at one of the games Suns vs Spurs and the man looks pretty good, he even got some pounds on him.
I'm curious, it's been 16 years since he announced that he was HIV positive. I don't know anyone who has been fortunate to live 5 years after discovering that they are HIV positive , little less 16.
They say he was taking drug cocktails that were suppose to prevent HIV evolving to AIDS and those cocktails are available for anyone with health insurance. I find this hard to believe. I mean, I don't want him to die of course, but I think that we should see more medical information on how he is able to live quite a normal, business led life for 16 years without any problems by only taking these "cocktails".
Does anyone have more information about this whole thing? It just seems all so hush hush. I mean wouldn't medical profession and news be exicited to report that they found something that can help you live a normal life 15+ years from the moment you are diagnosed with HIV and interview Magic Johnson and his doctors and stuff.

Here's some thoughts on why he's done so well:

Interesting, however, I've read and saw about people with hiv, not to mention having friends in medical profession and they say, it's a kind of a miracle. He is probably the only person who managed to live through 16 years with the viral infection (not AIDS). Usually the viral infection explodes into AIDS after a few years.
So, in fact, having millions and drugs that are not available to everyone else is making him stay healthy. Now, I personally think this is wrong. If there's something that in general can make everyone with HIV live 15+ years, I think it should be available, not free, but available to everyone, not just millionaires.

Have you heard the rumors that he actually doesn't have HIV?
In a GQ article a year ago or so, it's discussed in detail, that he never had it, but someone came up with this scheme to have him be this huge symbol for educating minorities about the dangers of unsafe sex and AIDS.
Really don't know if I believe it - but you're right, he's lived this well, this long, and he's kind of an anomoly.

I understand questioning the possibility of a conspiracy, but there have been many wealthy celebs that have recently died from AIDS:
Herb Ritts (2002)
David Brudnoy (2004)
Makgatho Mandela (2005)Why would only Magic get medication that these guys could probably afford too?

To be honest, I don't really know any of the names on that list. But I do know Magic. You see the difference? The whole world knows Magic. Second, he does have a lot of money, but I don't even think that it's money in question.
But back to things that bug me. He has a wife and kids and by information I read has contracted HIV before he got married to Cookie. So, does that mean that his kids and wife have HIV too?
I just don't get it. I mean, it is horrible to talk about the possibility of someone faking a deadly disease, but in today's world there are people that live and profit on tactics like that, so I guess that gives us the right to question things as well.
Judging by things, there are 2 possibilities here. That he never had a disease, or that there is a cure and that he paid HUGE money for it and is covering things up by opening foundations and preaching around the world about HIV and stuff.
I find it very hard to believe that there's a medicine that can keep you 15+ years AIDS free, when you are contracted by HIV. You said it, do you see when these people died? 2002, 2004 and 2005. Don't you think they had the money to fight the disease in a way that would keep them alive. I mean the same medicine should've been available to them the same way they are available to Magic.

Truly amazing. He has more money now then he ever had. Interesting.

An AP release, back in '97:
Johnson has been taking protease inhibitors, which reduce illnesses and lengthen life in some patients.
Nearly 90 percent of the people who take the powerful drugs within a few months of being diagnosed HIV-positive have undetectable levels similar to Johnson's condition, said Dr. Jeffrey Laurence, an AIDS researcher at Cornell Medical Center and a consultant to the American Foundation for AIDS Research.

My mom was a home health care nurse for a few years. Many of her patients were children with HIV or AIDS. One little girl in particular was HIV positive and actually had a state of "remission" and became HIV negative. Now, I don't know how that story goes, but she went on for about 2 years after that and was still HIV negative. Science and medicine are amazing... who know what Magic got his hands on; hell, maybe he was just plain lucky.

I have a cousin who has lived with HIV for about 15 years...he had a couple of close calls but pulled through. Callit luck?

he was one in a million as an athlete, maybe one in a million as an hiv carrier?

I also completely agree with you, Boz, when you said this:
"...it is horrible to talk about the possibility of someone faking a deadly disease, but in today's world there are people that live and profit on tactics like that, so I guess that gives us the right to question things as well."

Yah, HIV isn't like an immediate death sentence. You can't die from HIV, you die from catching another infection with your crippled immune system.
I know someone who's lived for quite some years without developing AIDS or, surprise, dying. I hope he doesn't either - he's a very nice bloke.

the only Magic Johnson I ever heard of is the one representing my third leg.
