Have you heard the rumors that he actually doesn't have HIV?
In a GQ article a year ago or so, it's discussed in detail, that he never had it, but someone came up with this scheme to have him be this huge symbol for educating minorities about the dangers of unsafe sex and AIDS.
Really don't know if I believe it - but you're right, he's lived this well, this long, and he's kind of an anomoly.
