Mid 80's, around 3rd or 4th grade, on a Radio Shack TRS-80 given to me by my grandfather. He was so into computers and engineering.
The only thing you could really do with it was write programs or play games from a cassette tape.

i played that super shitty pc game trying to get your wagon/family across the country to california without dying. that game was awesome.
in 10th grade we had our first real word processing class. we were supposed to turn off the monitor and type a paragraph without looking at the screen.
i turned off the computer (it was one of those shitty ibm machines where the monitor was sitting on the box on the desk) and i typed the whole lesson on a machine that wasn't even on.
the whole class laughed.
who's laughing now mother fuckers!?!?! i'm like a 007 of computers now!

Had a commodore 128k in the crib. Played games on it n stuff. Did a lil Basic.
At school we had machines that played Oregon Trail on.
I could never get to hunt those animals properly and I never made it to my destination.
Oh how I wish I could play that game again. I'd kill every rabbit and buffalo in sight. And eat good...real good.

This first time I worked on a computer, it wasn't even in the same state as me.
I was in High School. We had a terminal, which was like a huge steam-powered typewriter, with a big roll of paper in it. You dialed the phone to some place in the next state, where the computer we shared time on was. Then you put each end of the phone handset into a tight-fitting rubber cup on the side of the terminal. This was the modem.
You typed a command line into the terminal, and hit return. The message went down to Ohio, where the computer was. A few moments later, you'd get a response which would type out on the terminal. There was no screen! Having something in another state type something out right in front of you seemed like magic!
Each time you got a response from the machine, you also got a number back, in the margin. This number was the number of computer cycles you had used--usually a few dozen, or so. The school paid for computer time by the CPU cycle, and that was how you could track your account!
And yes, I do own and know how to use several slide rules!
And no, I'm not older than water. Older than booze, but not water!

It was cool to make atari-like plot based gfx back then. I made a bowling game in school.

Holy shit, skt - I'd completely forgotten about Sphinx Adventure!
That was the first and last text adventure game I ever played.
I was kind of stunned when I went to uni and found 18-24 year olds playing MUDs on the VAX systems we had access to. That's when I knew I wasn't [quite] the saddest bastard in the world..
Aaah, mammaries.

My actual first time was after I went to the library. I found this book entitled, "The Kids' Guide to Making A Web Page" or something similar, and I fell in love! That was the first time I ever did anything adventurous and on my own.
Anyway, I went on to make sites and Pokémon, books and hacking.
