What a horrible terrible thing to happen. I really hope they find her alive and well.
******BUT******
What the hell were the parents thinking, leaving three children alone in a foriegn country?! I'm not totally certain but contrary to what was originally reported, the the parents were apparently not checking on them every half an hour. No, I don't have kids but if I did, I certainly would /not/ have left them alone in this situation! They're intelligent educated people too, they don't have any excuse imo. Oh and on a differernt note, it's great this is getting so much media attention, but why this particular case?

If it was a working class single parent, the media would probably be treating it differently.
They maybe educated people but that doesn't mean they have any common sense.

... ?

They get media attention because it's a shocking story that sells papers, ads and clicks. People like stories like that, because it could happen to anyone, it's one of their fears.

You were never ever left alone as a kid? What difference does it make if it's a foreign country - it's one of those urbanisation complex things, therefore fairly secure. She was getting checked on every 20 minutes or so. They were on holiday.
Your line of argument runs along side neo-conservative paternalism - the parents are human. They were unlucky. That's life.
Sadly.

I hate human interest stories, particularly if they're about little pretty white girls. Why should I care about this story? Why do I need to know about it and have it reported to me every 5 minutes. There are much more important things going on around the world. There are children being forced in to slavery, the military etc, why this?
I can even understand it being reported in portugal but why in the UK?I feel sorry for the parents but I can't see this ending well.
- -sputnik-0
it's being reported in the US as well

I'm really sceptical about them checking every (as reported) 30 mins. Who goes out for a dinner and leaves every half an hour? In fact, who spends more than an hour out for a meal period? If you make the choice to leave your kids and go out for a meal, it just doesn't add up to me that they would be constantly getting up from the table and coming back. They shouldn't have been alone.

it's not very intelligent to leave any of your children alone like that, whether at home or abroad. i feel bad for the parents, but i wouldn't leave any of my children alone like that, ever.
- Jaline0
I agree sputnik. Primarily because she was only 4 years old.
Although Nairn is right as well.
- -sputnik-0
i don't believe he is...but i respect his opinion. my parents never, EVER left me alone when i was little like that. i don't know many parents who do. maybe when kids are a bit older, yes...but 4?
it takes the blink of an eye to kidnap a child so checking on her every 20 minutes is a joke.

(May 14 07, 08:35)oops...sorry about last post. i think the "that's life" argument is silly. you do everything you can to protect your children...yes, things happen, but there is such a thing as negligence and when you're negligent, shrugging your shoulders and saying "that's life" doesn't really apply to you,
- rafalski0

(May 14 07, 07:42)That's a story uk public wants to pay for. This is something they fear - that something terrible happens to them while they are vacationing. This is what they unite over. It happened to one of them - that's why they care more than about a million kids dying of starvation who knows where.
- cacoe0
Am I right in thinking that the twin siblings that were also left alone were even younger than madeline?
- Jaline0
I think I know what you're saying sputnik. I definitely would be extra careful in a foreign country, no matter what age my child was.

link or this didn't happen...
