www.guardian.co.uk just updated. What's everyone thinking? It seems like they've been moving in this direction for a while (comment is free, travel section).
Seems nice and clear to me - just what you'd want from a paper site although it'll take me a while to learn where all my old favourites have gone.

nice. the abundance of whitespace makes it a serious scroll down though. and once you get there there is a huge gap and a cut off column in safari.
guess it is beta eh?
looks refreshingly clean though. especially for a newspaper site.

"comedy podcast - LOL"
haha

I never could find anything on their site, always wondered how people get to their good articles. Probably by reading paper issue. Seems improved, but somewhat chaotic - nothing draws attention when there's so many headlines. No hierarchy, all i see is "Zimbabweans face power cuts"
in the middle. But it is late though and I had 2 beers..
A year ago Guardian won world's best newspaper layout award in a tie with Rzeczpospolita http://www.editorsweblog.org/pri…
Rzeczpospolita also updated their bad web layout recently to another bad one http://rp.pl Still lagging far behind their paper version.New Guardian reminds me of http://www.elpais.com but isn't better.

newspaper design is tricky as fuck. your audience is everyone.

seriously have to analyze stats with news sites that appeal to stock brokers and housewives.

This site is so simple. Really amazing if you think about it. Not a huge market, but is a model for others. Really well-organized. thing about doing news sites is every department wants front page exposure. always designed by commitee. nightmarish. crazy when someone actually hits it.

Looking good - i always thought it was a bit hard wading deep into the old site, so it's good to see more on the front page.
That said, i wish they'd make more of the colour in their sub-sections. It's a bit too dense down there, below the line.

i apologize for not reading here before making my broadcast.
i am sorry... i won't do it again. please, can i have my sweets back?

agree with rafalski, reminded me of El Pais straight off - I like the new ordered sections. good one.

well, put it this way, i saw this thread, went to the guardian site and have been there for over half an hour. i think it probably works okay.

Like it a lot.
Strong grid based layout. Clean and totally legible, information placed where is suposed to be.
I like the first 600 vertical pixels, with all the main news there and then the rest of the articles. The only thing i don't like is the navbar under the logo. Didn't worked properly on the past edition, don't work today.
Anyway, I'm waiting for an article on it by this guy:

As someone who visits the site every day, I also think it's a great improvement.
Looks to be heavily influenced by the Times' recent relaunch, though:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk - there's not all that much that separates the two any more (from a design perspective, at least).

http://www.newyorker.com is a real beauty. The Guardian is honest but a little plain.

it's what i'd expect from the guardian

if i'm not mistaken the guy behind the design had was paid heavily to redesign our Publico newspaper (paper + web).
and i have 2 remarks. not only he killed the old characteristic feeling of the original design in the paper version (which was much better than this lollypop version) - as he also didn't put many effort into the web version.

I like it, I've really liked the arts blog for a while now and have been waiting for them to update the main site in kind.
Hope they get the subsections sorted soon - always disappoints me when a new homepage turns up for something I like and the rest isn't done yet

it's ok, good for the amount of content, they could've done something a bit nicer with the navigation at the top, seems a bit too light... Hard to maintain, but a stronger horizontal grid structure would make it a bit easier to digest...

looks like English papers are following the iht design (http://www.iht.com/).
Another really good example of a this type of publication is The First Post (http://www.thefirstpost.co.uk), although this one have a lot less content (so it's easier to design...)

I like it, their design teams outstanding, they got a handful of entries in the CR annual this year.
