Ok. I have to create a logo for a Crime Film and Lterature event. I want to keep it simple and typographic.
Trouble is i'm really struggling avoiding cliches!! Anyone got any ideas? What typfaces say crime to you?

cliché's aren't always bad. especially not for events that attract a specific audience which has a certain saviness of the graphic styles and typography that identifies their niche of interest.
you should use those cliché's but perhaps give it an unexpected twist or by slightly altering the context...

comic sans is a crime (joke)
yeah. try something visual. i was thinking along the lines of a man casting a long shadow. maybe treat it like you are looking down.
the movie Sin City might give you some great inspiration as well.

get a pen and paper and write down all the cliches on one half and the things you find inspiring or surprising on the other half..
try to make a visual match in your mind.

Do a gun with a "bang flag" shot out of it like bugs bunny style.
Crime/ literature...it's in the bag homes. Stating the obvious, 1st idea.

you say don't want a cliche but then you ask what typefaces say crime... surely you're asking for a cliche?
it's all in the application of the typeface as opposed to the actual typeface itself i reckon.
on a more helpful note this is what dafont had to say about it

don't use any stupid degraded fonts. That shart is so played 5 years ago.
*Realizes that will be retro in 10 years

what about a pen and an inkblot
but instead of ink it is blood
ofcourse, cliche but not necessarily bad..
