Being a (soon ex) design student myself I think there's a lot of young 'designers' out there whose education of what design is comes from the internet. They have no real idea of what graphic design is or what its principals are...
ie.
They see themselves more as stylists. I'm sure most older designers would choke on this word.

Biggest issue I've found is the attitude and outlook some of the aformentioned young-guns have, on one side you have the more clever ones who want to do work like an Eatock and then on the other you have the image-makers who want to do work like a No-Pattern... 90% of the commercial world has little place for either...
It's hard to find young designers who are willing to make the best of every opportunity and design the content with consideration...
Not every project can be a conceptually or visually stunning piece, but every project can be at the least, well-designed...
