Possibly a Spiekermann thing. He designed the mag and their text face.

i think he changed it to Officina in recent times. the serif maybe a custom done for it.

the log for the Economist is custom drawn. their body font is Ecotype, which was updated by Spiekerman during the latest redesign.
The face in your example is beither. still checking in on it...
