really interesting.
what applications any of you guys useing for designing typefaces?

am i the only one who thinks wim crowell is kinda...well...bullshit? I mean it looks like he just wanted to do what he wanted regardles of client. It sounds like he stretches his explainations of why he did what he did on each project. i mean his shit's dope but...come on!!! no one understands the theory behind his work unless he explains it.
sorry, i just hate designers who design for designers and not for the general public.

(Apr 16 07, 05:35)as he states in the second .mov he designs for himself a slight bit more than he designs for the public. (aesthetic vs. function)
you can only respect that. it's not like he wasn't aware of the balance that needed to be struck.

I'm finding it interesting so far. The thing i find quite disturbing is how difficult it is for me to spend the time to watch the whole thing. It's as if once I'm on the computer I'm so used to jumping through hoops for clients and getting things finished that I feel guilty about spending that much time on something not directly related to production.
- _salisae_0
not sure why i don't have that problem (perhaps production is merely a step parent to me) but i am looking forward to connecting my old g4 to the tele so i can watch specialten, google video .. etc. and not feel the slightest bit jumpy

(Apr 16 07, 05:35)thats a bit harsh and unjust..
designers for designers are all those 'scratch graphic' guys who want to make art.Crouwel made some defining logos and typefaces that still workd now.
his work is very accesible and there is alot of variation in it.crouwel did a lot for the public servces of the netherlands(railway,...) so how can u justify your statement that he is not a designer for the general public.
Ps. my regards, the general public need to be educated on good design cause 80 percent have no taste whatssoever...

is it the same clip from the Helvetica movie? I liked him in that role...
- OSFA0
90%

I'd like to hear what Janne has to say. Surely Crouwel's own progeny can shed some light for us.
- mimeartist0
some people you've just got to trust to do a good job, and wim is one of them, and the reason people go to him
- _salisae_0
not sure neue .. he doesn't discuss helvetica so likely not.
i haven't seen it yet (links?)
- _salisae_0
thank you!
- walkman0
yes thanks!
I really liked his brief, but well put, discussion (or definition) about the divide between art and design...
- Crouwel0
i got tired of all your questions. hence this interview.
i'll leave it at that.

(Apr 16 07, 06:06)i dont research wim crowel. i didnt know he did work for the railway..i dont really actually care.
fuck the general public and educating them on good design. no one cares about design unless it stops working.
in America, design is more geared to sell stuff. Because who are you selling to? middle america. they just dont "get it".
his work just sells better to the hipster artsy design concious public in europe.
so when i see him explaining theory behind his grids, its cool that its there but, no one would ever see those things.

Look into the work of Gert Dumbar, he's from the same school of thought and is more applied professionally.
- Crouwel0
oh come on peter popoff.
crouwel has done so incredibly much for large dutch companies and institutions that it left a mark on the way we looka t graphic design and how it embeds in the cultural consciousness.
you can't simply define him as a design hipster designing for designers for fucks sake.

(Apr 16 07, 12:38)exactly. but he is still active, crouwels most known work is from many decades ago and after the war there was a huge boost in exploration in both architecture and art.
in this postmodern times there is a much larger need to keep your head above the water by making money and thus applying to the rules of the free market.
