Growing animation

I've always wondered how to do that specific type of animation where vector lines grow, lengthen etc. I can't imagine every frame is manually cut out from a complete image then reversed? Complex masks? I have no idea...

complex masks. It takes a little bit of time but once you get going it goes fast.

i've seen the same effect in many commercials etc, i assume they'd generally use after effects for this. are we talking about the same thing? LOTS of masks unveiling the full shape?

you could start with the completed vector graphic and, frame by frame, undraw it. then reverse the frames.

I /could/ but, I've seen some animations that do this that are so smooth, you can't imagine them un-drawing every frame. Anyone know of tutorials outlining the process gone into this effect?

ok, stealing the swf and zooming in helped see the masks :D
nice!

In addition to masks, you'll get a better effect if certain elements scale-up.
The North Kingdom site- it looks as if the leaves scale-up, rather than just masking-in.

Anyone here done one of these before? It must take a shit load of time even when you know what you're doing

it seems like a frightening commitment of time upfront before you even know how it will turn out, doesn't it?
- cacoe0
I just wanna experiment doing it to be honest...

use vector elements in ae, scales up forever
masking is yr friend

Roll over my logo in my site. Took about 15 minutes to do and is a combination of masks and just growing out pieces.

Yo, Smielke,
It's a wee bit spurty there, but I think you're on to something.

i've done something like this before. first i take the complete vector shape into flash. put it on the last fram of the reveal. copy it, then paste it into the previous frame. select the part you want to hide, then hit delete (using the selection tool, not the subselection tool). then copy and paste that into the previous frame and repeat. probably not the most elegant way to do it, but it's come out nice in the past.

interesting, interesting... i'd be trying it now if adobe hadn't taken down their mx 2004 trial...

smielke, what I really like about yours is that it does it in reverse as well.
what the simple tip on making it go backwards??
- blaw0
what i was trying to say was what subversive described, but thanks to the "reverse frames" option you can just have the artwork, hit f6 in the next frame tweak it, continue. then select all of the frames, right click, reverse frames.
a very simple version here (on nav rollover):
http://www.thesimplegroove.com/...but, thanks to the fact that you can manipulate shape edges, etc. so easily in flash, it's really simple to do this on a larger scale.

@hiatus
It looks to me that generally growing circular masks reveal the final image, then they shrink to make it go back again.
