does anyone know the typical rates for a 4pg booklet/tray card + minimal promo (poster, postcard, buttons)?
i haven't done any albums for clients before aside from friends and am trying to feel things out.

im really interested in the going rate for a package like this as well ive always done it for free for friends but want to break into doing it for others.

... and yes, i know to ballpark the hours involved x my rate = cost, but when i do that it seems really high. i also know to factor in if i'm illustrating more of it or if someone is shooting the artwork...

I would gauge somewhat on how well they are doing if they are up & comers & I liked the music I would do it for much less than a established band.

i think the hourly rate x hours spent is the way to go on these.
we just finished a full 6-panel CD layout. It took forever. Endless changes. Bands are finicky and always change their minds on stuff. These projects need to be expensive because they take a lot of time and resources.
That said...these projects can be fun to do. So i might be willing to take a price cut if the work will be good. Just make sure to choose who you work with carefully.

I'll suggest one thing, may be common knowledge but after doing a web site for a band not long ago, no matter how cool you may be with someone, have details in writing that specify the amount of revisions allowed before charging for additional ones.
I suggest that if you end up working out a flat fee with them. That's what I did and it ended up going on for much longer than it should have.

i agree with having a solid agreement before work starts in any case. i've had some of those projects as well.
i definitely want to do more work for music with the amount of creative freedom it offers, but with anything need to understand the business side of it a little better.

the few that have come up this week are on small labels.
