Hey,
what are some good designers out there today who does nice (maybe experimental but doesn't have to)typographic designs for editorial and such? Feel like I don't know enough...

You should look at some of Jop van Bennekom's work, he does Butt magazine www.buttmagazine.com and Fantastic Man www.fantasticmanmagazine.com. Both good for style & content.
Probably best to buy the mags though....
