Looks like a nicely customized Futura to me.

Old book, I presume? Probably pre-digital.

Wow, the kerning is awful in that Monotype version. Elsner+Flake's is better:

yes, the book is pretty old. i actually bought the book just for the typeface on the cover.

Here's a question for you about kerning, Typographica:
If a font has bad/insufficient kerning programmed into it, and I use Optical kerning, is that good enough or is the Optical kerning option just rubbish?
When working with thoughtfully drawn and kerned typefaces, I use the default "Metrics" setting (i.e. Adobe Garamond pro, Thesis, Fedra, Gotham, etc...), although occasionally I use the optical option – fore example, I'm using Helvetica Neue UltraLight for headlines in a book at the moment, and they seem to look better with optical kerning.
Your thoughts?
thx.

Most fonts are kerned for text (looser) setting, so CS's impressive Optical Spacing can definitely improve headlines. Just keep in mind that there isn't yet a machine that can beat a trained eye (for instance, Optical avoids touching pairs, which are sometimes desired). So you may need to make manual adjustments.

are there any books or resources that can i can use to help teach me more on how to properly kern type? my type class was a joke and i didn't learn anything valuable in it.

Sadly I hear that way too often. What up with our design teachers? Type is the most important part of design.
