(Mar 23 07, 05:26)Are we ever going to end this? Your questions has already been answered.
People have done things like this in the name of the God of the bible, but that doesn't mean the bible condones it.

ok, thanks, that's good. I dont knwo, some of the stuff people have been quoting, it sounds awful! Maybe the bible's all about subjective interpretation for the time? You know, take out of thes ancient books what you will, keep their traditions alive etc. etc. but just dont be dogmatic fundamentalist literalist evangelical, cos thats just perverse and wrong??

incog, why not attack the people who claim to have faith and use it to drive their own agendas rather than blame us for it?
The reason for the bad PR is because of people like James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Ted Haggard and so on. Why not fight them? That is the root of the problem.

That stuff is awful!
It's like anything. Religion is just another banner people can hold up to justify their actions.
Personally, I think part of the problem is "keeping the traditions alive." To me, religion is nothing more than tradition. If you really read the New Testament, it's more about abolishing tradition (Jewish traditions) and replacing them with a more internally-focused (rather than outward appearance-focused), honest, and open life/faith.
A lot of "Christians" these days don't get that, and start making laws/rules that are nearly identical to the ones Jesus said he came to abolish.

The creation account of Genesis can be interpreted in a Framework context, i.e. - the text being poetic language that us lil humans can wrap our lil brains around.
flagellum
(Mar 22 07, 12:37)then please explain why many of the devout (and especially fundamentalist) christians i've spoken to categorically reject that humans evolved from apes.
was the adam and eve story meant to be poetically interpreted? if so, how?

You're right Mr Dobs, those people carry a lot of the blame, but if you silence one fanatic, another will just stand up and take his place. You have to start by showing people how reality is different from how those wack-jobs portray it. I don't want to be grouped in with those guys. That's all I'm trying to do. I am not trying to blame/accuse/criticize anyone. Believe what you want - it won't bother me.

You said it exactly incog. It's hypocrisy and arrogance.

Sputnik - I can't speak for flagellum, but I think proof is the wrong way to approach this. You can't prove we evolved from apes. No one can prove there is a God.

(Mar 23 07, 07:57)i don't think i mentioned proof anywhere in my post. they categorically reject the IDEA to begin with. this contradicts what he wrote about poetic interpretation.
- kmac440
it wasn't the bible, but the version. The bible has been interpreted by various "theologians" and they've changed things to suit the times. The version we are familiar with puts down sex and women, but that isn't how it was originally written or intended.
There are also books that got cut out of the KJ bible, for whatever reasons. It's the people who were put in charge of the bible who were awful.

i respect you and your beliefs incog. gramme too. You seem like good people, and believers.
These threads are basically created to bait flagellum who is a fundamentalist zealot and cannot countenance any views expressed that counter his orthodoxy.
pay no mind to them. this is how NT functions.

Are you really fussing over this? I just got the "Baby got Book" vid in my email.. I laughed my ass off..
I am not Christian, but those people are at least being positive, and I would rather have that then a bunch of gangsta rap or bum fights on Youtube..
- kmac440

I'd rather they didn't rip off youtube at all, really.
thou shalt not rip

Mimio - I am not denying that many "Christians" are hypocritical, arrogant, or self-righteous. But not all are. My point all along as been that you can't define the group by actions of a few.
sputnik - kmac44 is right. I am just saying no matter how far you delve into interpretation, you will never be able to come to a solid conclusion about who is right. It's about choosing what to believe.
- TheBlueOne0
..and for crying out loud - we didn't "evolve from apes". That's a hoary chestnut. We share similar ancestors to apes but an ape didn't turn into a human one day on the old african savannah...
