how much BS do you produce when trying to sell your concept to a client. i mean when you already have a client secured, and ur passing along concepts to him. how often do you just invent 10 lines of fancy soundnig bullshit of theory and explanation behind the concept just to convince the client to use it over some crappy idea of his?

I only really do it for one client but he actually likes that. Guess it makes him feel good to have someone always trying to sell for his approval. Bastid.

I dont BS them, but I do explain the resons for the layout and colour etc. They are usually paying a decent amount of cash so giving them an explanation on why your ideas are good and why they cant deviate from the grid (web design) on a whim is a good way to make them feel like they are getting good value for money.
so no BS here but a bit of fluffing never hurts, stuff thats true that bulks up your documentation.

you should respect your clients.
if clients do not respect you, refuse them.
if you do not respect your clients, you do not respect your profession. which means you have no integrity, which means you are a fraud.
goodluck changing your attitude.

tell it how it is, say they have bad ideas when they do and have a reason. be prepared and willing to receive the same treatment. the fact you may personally have an issue with something is not reason enough to persuade them.
i recently went through this with a client. i presented my case as well i could citing examples and reasons in a well thought out prepared document.
at the end, he said, "we're paying right?"
he can have whatever he wants as long as he is treating me with the same respect i am treating him.
open communication is key to success for both parties.
while you're immediate goal may be to make pictures that make your peers envious, the real goal should be to prove a record of success both in launching projects be it broadcast, web, or print that both please and benefit the client as well as yourself

oh wow...well i'd say i BS quite a bit..but i only do it when i reallllly need to. it tends to happen with really small local clients who aren't paying very much in the very first place and expect the world.

(Mar 19 07, 17:53)i taught myself to be fair and square to them, tell them they can only get so much for the pay.
if they do not agree, say you are sorry and be kind and wish them best of luck finding a more affordable solution.
stay calm and friendly though.

I'd really like to contribute to this, but then at the end of the day, what rand says is true - you'll never learn from advice on here or from anyone else, you just go through your life experiencing things and it sorts itself out to a greater or lesser extent. that's what makes us all different people.
