On my site, I get this message when I try to get to any subfolder. I checked the settings and none of these folders seem to be protected in any way.
What am I missing? Any suggestions on how to access these folders?
Here's an example of what I can't get to: http://www.nearestexit.com/proje…
Thanks in advance.

check .htaccess file

check the permissions for projects and maps folder. Give them both "755" permission and see what happens.

I can't seem to find the .htaccess file. Should I have one? Maybe that's the problem.
Also, the directories are all 755 permissions, so that's not the problem.

directory listing is turned off in apache. it's looking for an index.htm file. it won't just list the folder contents unless you enable dir listing in httpd.conf or for specific dirs via .htaccess. you probably can't see htaccess because you're using an app that doesn't display files beginning with a dot, which are hidden by default.

it's not necessary to have an .htaccess file. but if you have permission for a starting \www folder the dependent ones inherit that same permission - unless there's an .htaccess or other sort of user management \www upwards blocking your access to them. or you don't have -w (writing) permission to create new folders. i'd check with the hosting service.

if you don't have an index file of some sort, it's perfectly normal to get a 403. most hosts set up their servers this way and is not indicative of a permissions issue.

in most apps there's an option to hide/show .ht files. if i recall correctly in Filezilla you can see them by default.

OK, so I found the .ht file. How do I edit it to allow the contents of that directory to be available without having an index.html file.

open the file and write a new line:
Options +Indexes
save as ".htaccess". beware that it must be saved as plain ascii text with no blank spaces in the end of the lines.

Cool. Thanks Witt.
I think my brain might just be operating on a very slow setting today.
