if i use something like traktor or discoxt to mix music on my macbook laptop, is it possible to listen to headphones and have stuff playing out to a receiver? these computers only have one audio output, so the answer is no, right? how do you do this...
- Meeklo0
get an audio interface..
there are usb / fw and I even saw one that is PCMIA

m-audio audiophile

this would work, right? this is the cheapest thing i could find...
- sherman0
while your there at m-audio you might want to pick up one of their evolution controllers.
- sherman0
dont bother buying the cheapest you can find.

(Feb 26 07, 15:10)does that allows you to have different sound outputs though?
like previewing on laptop, mix on speakers?I dont know man.. that is just to cheap.. looks nice though

Yeah, when you plug it in your mac recognizes it as a sound card. so when you go into your preferences in traktor, you set the cue audio (or preview or whatever) to the iMic USB audio interface and plug your headphones into it. Now your headphones are controlled by the cue volume levels and when you preview a track in your playlist. Have your main output set to core audio (or main audio) and plug your live output into your headphone jack. Ive been doing it for about 2 years now and havent run into a problem yet.

I concurr with ninjasavant.
iMic is great and does the job perfectly.

go with Serato Scratch Live, you have separate audio outs for left and right turntables so you can cue up the music before mixing it in, and the vinyl links directly to the timecode so you can literally scratch MP3s.
ultra suave.

I use ableton with an M audio card, but run it all through a mixer, so preview tracks on a mixer as per using vinyl. Feels nicer that way for me anyways.

what controllers has anyone here tried?
Faderfox? M-Audio?
i know there are a few others?
- Meeklo0
ninjasavant..
I might check it out.. never even heard about it..
- Meeklo0
faderfox looks nice, might be a bit expensive..
m-audio's construction might not be the best.
Edirol or Korg are solid, behringer are good too

Never tried a controller....quite fancy it as I keep having to organise my keys to fire clips and whatnot, and if I had to play without a mixer, I'd be screwed. What I'm waiting for is the iPhone esque screen with a full mixer controlled by touch....come on ableton what you waiting for!?!?!

I use an evolution midi keyboard. I bought it way back to teach myself to play keyboard, now i just use it cuz it has 16 programmable knobs.

i have been using the M-Audio triggerfinger to play out recently, with stellar results. It seems to be a nicely constructed controller. awesome for tapping out beats with a sampler.
for an audio interface, the presonus Firebox is unbeatable for DJ applications. for higher end, i recommend the MOTU ultralite.

I have the solution u require.
Go to Radio Shack or whatever u have in Europe...
Get the cable that has the headphone jack on one end, and the other end is a RCA cable (red & white)...
Plug the headphone end into your laptop, plug the other end of the cable (the RCA side) into your Reciever/amp/Mixer/etc and voila.
Cheap...probably less than 5 bucks or euros...

well said. just use a splitter.
